The use and benefits of emails

Introduction

The aim of this report is to analyze and evaluate a graph that shows the use and benefits of email in businesses located in different countries. To achieve this, businesses in twenty-four countries have been surveyed and their answers are compared.

Information provided

This graph displays each country involved in separate rows, taking into account the average time their companies have spent using emails in the year 2004, measured in hours per day. A different column exhibits the percentage of businesses who agree that email and the internet have helped increase revenue.

Graph analysis

The result of the survey is that Asian countries such as Philippines and Hong Kong are the ones that spend more time using emails, even twice as much as in European countries like Germany, Italy or France. Moreover, although increased time spent does not guarantee increased revenue, as is shown by businesses in the United States and Australia, there is a tendency to have better results with prolonged use of emails.

Report

First and foremost, it is of utmost importance to mention that the aim of this report relies on analyzing the tendencies in email usage and its effect at a global scale.

Evolution
Throughout history, the use of email has undergone a process of deep change. It represents the main tool for business communication. Consequently, the expansion of global commerce and network trades brought with it the development of this instrument. Nevertheless, not all countries present the same level both of usage and attitude towards its usefulness.
Geographical differences
According to a survey carried out by Grant Thornton International, the Philippines are leaders as regards time spent dealing with emails with an overwhelming amount of 2.1 hours a day. Following closely, Hong Kong, India and USA present similar rates. On the other hand, countries such as Greece and Russia spend less than an hour checking and responding emails.
Impact on revenues
Companies which devote more time dealing with emails and Internet seem to agree on the fact that this tool helps increasing their revenue. In contrast to this, firms which report little use of email are prone to thinking that these tools don’t have a leverage effect on their revenues, being France the more sceptical country with only 13% of its companies agreeing on the positive effect of electronic mailing.
